We've all experienced periods in our relationships where we feel distanced
from our mates. Often this is referred to as - drifting apart. It's common for
us to blame our busy lives for this, but the reality is, no matter how busy or
hectic our lives may be, we must make time for those things which really matter.
Solving this problem may be easier than you think. I can be as easy as simply
turning off the television. If you think about it, how many evenings do we spend
vegetating in front of the boob-tube, rather than talking with our loved ones?
Or possibly the computer has become a major distraction - email, chat rooms,
etc. We have to remember that communication is one of the keys to any successful
relationship. Without it, we lose the closeness and intimacy we once had, and
all things related - romance, passion and sex to name a few.
Just the simple act of talking about our day with our mates brings us closer
together. This allows us to connect with our partners, and provides us with a
sense security and well-being. It also allows us to vent - relieving tension and
stress. This can also facilitate communicating deeper thoughts and emotions
which helps us to identify problems and concerns within our relationships which,
if left unchecked, could turn into major issues. This deeper communication also
helps us to grow closer and enables us to build strong and lasting bonds.
Communication is intimacy. Many confuse intimacy with sex. Although by
definition, being intimate with someone can refer to having sexual contact or
sexual relations - however, true intimacy is the close personal relationship you
have with another. It's the quality, quantity, and depth of our knowledge of
another. To me, sex isn't true intimacy, but rather one of the many bi- product
thereof. Therefore, if sex and romance are lacking in your relationship,
consider how much time you spend really connecting with your mate. It's very
possible your level of intimacy (or lack thereof), is what you should be
concentrating on.
I would encourage everyone to forgo tonight's television reruns, instead
electing to turn down the lights, put on some soft music, and spend the evening
getting reacquainted with the one you love.
